Religion: Do We Really Need It Anymore?

A few days ago I had a really involving conversion about Islam and religion in general. The genesis of this conversation started with observing a FOX News interview with a Muslim singer. During the conversation the topics discussed were how most people don't follow their religion close enough and that every mainstream religion has its degrees of radicalism. This got me to think: do we really need religion anymore? I don't think we necessarily need the institution of religion anymore. I'll explain why but I want to list the beneficial aspects of it first.

I suppose I should start with how religion builds communities, yet that's a bit of a broad statement because what churches, synagogues, mosques and other establishments do is build relations with whomever attends. This is the primary positive attribute because that is the root, the beginning point to everything. The reason why it's the root of everything is because our psyche requires that we firm bonds and seek common interests. These bonds, in turn, allow us to feel safe. Since we feel safe with these bonds and relationships, we don't have to conform to the laws of nature depicted in Leviathan.

The second biggest thing religion does is create morals for society to live by. I firmly believe that if some type of moral religion did not exist, we would in a perpetual natural state that is nature. It would be survival of the fittest; murder, rape, pillaging and suffering would be the norm. Let's take a look at morals for a second because it should be clear what I mean by morals. I equate morals with concepts like Karna, honor, civility and Aristotelian ethics. These are pretty ambiguous concepts and can be the subject of another post but I feel they describe what I think are at the core of what morals are. There are other positive aspects about religion; however, most of them can be easily deduced to either psychological bonds or morals.

And now I arrive to the point of this post and that is why I think we don't need the institution of religion anymore. I will mention the typical tropes this kind of discussion always seem to devolve to because there is a mediocrum of truth related to them. One of them is that all the major religions are accountable for many deaths in all of history. But I'm not going to travel down that rocky road.

What I think is really detrimental to society is ignorance and intolerance that is bred from radicalism and, lack of a better term, faith. The reason why I think this is because I think everyone has the capacity to reason and use logic yet some of the faithful choose not to believe in something that cannot be proven by either of those two criteria. Thi maybe the reason why there's an increase in atheism and self proclaimed agnosticism. What I mean is that I think people are starting to realize that certain traditions are purely arbitrary but that's besides that point.

The next couple of topics share a common thread but are distinct to warrant a separate discussion. They are intolerance and ignorance. Intolerance, I feel is a bit of a stereotype but like many things there is some truth to it. The biggest example is a lot more prevalent than others and that is gay rights movement. I will admit that I do have a bias in that LGBT people have every right to intermarry as they please. The issue of legality should only be raised in the secular world and not the religious realm. If the religions of the world want to prevent them from spiritually getting married, that is their prerogative too; however, that isn't the main topic. What I wanted to convey is that intolerance breeds hate. Hate can evolve into atrocious acts (read every religious major conflict).

The biggest thing that I think is bringing down society, which is helped by religion, is ignorance. What I mean by ignorance is not just the lack of knowledge but also the conviction to belief. An example of this is a bit anedoctal but it illustrates the core of the problem with ignorance. I have had many discussions about evolution and how it's pretty much proven, yet even with overwhelming evidence that suggests evolution is happening; they still hold on to their convictions and believe that it doesn't exist and that God created everything.

Hopefully you can see the basis of my points and opinions and please comment if you feel I maybe wrong (I will delete any and all inflammatory comments that do not add to the discussion).

AP and IRS Scandal

After a cursory glance at this AP/Justice department business, I feel a bit concerned that the Justice department is recording journalists from the news organization AP because what is AP doing to deserve this scrutiny? I mean I know they reported stuff that pertained to national security so from my current understanding of law, what the Justice department did doesn't appear to be totally legal and it certainly isn't unconstitutional. In my humble opinion, the only way this would be unconstitutional is of the Justice department prevented or abducted the news from coming out. Although I can see a claim for invasion of privacy.

As for this IRS "scandal" I don't think there really is a story to tell. I mean politically profiling isn't a big thing for me especially since one of the biggest staples in the conservative philosophy is fiscal responsibility. So if these, for lack of a better term, PACs aren't soothsaying money on things that aren't political, I see no controversy here. Unless they're doing something they aren't suppose to be doing, what real harm does it do? Perhaps I'm missing something!

Apex 11.1 - Review

I set this ROM I did things a little bit differently.  I completely uninstalled the previous ROM and used Heimdall to flash this ROM.  The Apex website was very concise and easy to use when installing the ROM.

With that out of the way, This ROM as the best launcher I've come across.  Everything is on the corners; from the contacts in the lower-left to the music/video/camera on the upper-right. You also get the same touchwiz launcher as well.

If I can, I will use this launcher in future ROMs.  Of course I would review their stock as well.

Unfortunately, there were some problems.  Just like the other ROMs I've tested, this one doesn't sync with all the apps that I've downloaded from the market.  TiBu is great for this but the number one fault is the standard phone program.  Every time I use the phone I the program would have to force close and my phone service wouldn't work for a few seconds.  I re-flashed just to make sure it was a bad flash but the problem wasn't remedied.

Other than those two problems I had, this ROM is very fast and efficient although, the camera does take a few seconds to load but seeing as that's the norm.

I would recommend this ROM just because of the launcher.

SensatioN - Review

I've been using SensatioN for the past couple of months.  The rom is phenomenal, one of the best I've used so far!  It's smooth, fast and efficient at memory usage.  There are some things that were a problem for me however.

Well the first thing I did was flash a rooted kernel called atomic fusion.  I then flashed SensatioN the normal way through clockworkMOD and restored through TiBu.

Some of the problems were I couldn't sync with any of my saved contact or the apps that I've downloaded.  If it wasn't for TiBu I wouldn't have any of my apps but that's why I use TiBu.

Sorry this entry isn't as verbose as the last few but I really didn't find anything wrong with it.  I would definitely use this as my primary ROM.  I would highly recommend this rom to any Samsung Galaxy S flasher; at least to test out.

Illuminance - Review

Illuminance - Custom Rom

For the past week I've been using this rom and I do have to say if you want a stable rom that looks very close to stock then this is the one for you.  As you can see from the screen shots that the gui looks very nice.
Performance wise, it's fast and unlike Fusion IX I rarely had that home button problem.  Almost everything loaded up nicely except for Gallery.  I could get it to load but nothing would show up.  I would recommend getting a different picture viewer if you want to use this rom with pictures.

This rom is rooted so you can install programs that need su.  What comes with this rom is all the standard apps like video player, music player and all the other standard android apps.  Something that's pretty nice is you get Polaris Office with this rom but I prefer QuickOffice.

One thing to note is that you won't be getting any advanced options in the settings with this rom.

Other than all that if you were to ask me if I would return to this rom in the future, I would most definitely come back.  I may even save all my info with TiBu so I can come back to it as if I have never left it...

Fusion IX Review

XDA-Fusion

For the past week and a half I was playing around with Fusion IX which is a customizable rom for the Samsung Galaxy S Android phone.  Not sure if it was me but this one seems like the buggiest rom I've played with.  It has some major bugs that I would consider a deal breaker if I were choosing this as my "default" rom. If I knew more about programming I would come up with a program to emulate these roms so you don't waste time flashing them.  If there isn't one out there yet, I call this mine!!

Back on topic, the stock theme of this rom is quite colorful to say the least! The colors are a little too much if you ask me, from purples to blacks and some blue accents make the default theme a little too contrasting. That said, the designer definitely got something right with an animated notification drop-down menu, toggle and status bar icons. If I could find them in the zip file, I would definitely use these on my theme design.

Other than that, the rom has a problem with going back to home. What I mean is that when you press the home button on the phone itself, it takes you to the app list rather than the home screen. Once you actually get to the home screen it takes forever to load the widgets you have. This could be because my phone can't handle it but it's a samsung galaxy s!

The other biggest bug I've seen is that it fails at syncing up with google. I can't get my apps to download unless I use an app like titanium backup. My gmail contacts don't even sync up not does at&t contact backup service.

If it wasn't for these bugs, I would totally recommend this rom but until the collective fixes these bugs I would use this rom.

Continuum 6.1 - 2.3.4

This is my review of the rom Continuum 6.1 created by Team Continuum.  It's a customized rom that runs on a Samsung Galaxy S using the android OS 2.3.4.  It also utilized the Talon kernel (ver. 0.3.1) from TalonDEV - XDA Developers.

Now this is a forewarning,  I don't have nearly the technical skills to go really in depth into this rom solely because I don't have the experience in coding such things (I'm teaching myself Java as I write this) so forgive me if I'm not too technical.  As my knowledge improves so will my jargon and descriptions.  Go here if you want a more in depth specs XDA-Developers - Continuum 6.1

To get this review started, after you're done flashing you are greeted with the AT&T World Phone splash screen then the Talon Logo.  Next is a fun boot animation that starts with a star field and merges into the word CONTINUUM...pretty cool!  The phone then loads the rom and media scanner activates....

This is by far one of the more stable roms I've had so far.  I was using Cognition 4.4.3 for awhile then switch to Firefly 3.0 (my fav until Continuum).  Coming from Firefly, this one is almost exactly like it in that it's very smooth although there are some lagginess but more on this later.  All the apps I've run have loaded fast and super smooth.  I like the launcher with this rom because of the transitions between the home screens, app list and the actual app.  They all seem to go to the background.  If I'm not mistaken, it uses the Touchwiz 3.0 instead of Touchwiz 4.0.  I wish I could play with the new interface but if it is 3.0 and it works.  Speaking of the launcher if you hold down on the app list button, 5 mini home screens appear with what's stored in them...pretty cool!

Over all battery is good, after a day of use, I'm normally down to 40-30% life (this is with texting, surfing on the net, using apps like intune and watching a few videos...,etc).  I haven't had to recycle the battery yet but I hear it's a good idea to do that when flashing new roms.

After a few months of using this rom, it appears to have some bugs in it.  I would have to restart the phone because it was just too slow at loading apps and widgets.  When it was a fresh reboot, the rom ran smooth and fast but having to reboot so much just killed this rom for me.  Perhaps it was something to do with my own setup and installation process.  I look forward to the next version to see if any of the bugs still persist.
